Sen. Pat Roberts: A Bushevik ass-kissing the military industrial complex!

September 27, 2007

Dear Ms. Nxxxxxxxx:

Thank you for sharing your views regarding United States policy towards Iran. I appreciate your taking the time to contact me.

Iran poses a clear and present danger to the entire region, and the world, as it continues building its nuclear weapons program. The Bush Administration and Congress have tried several options to contain or end the threat Iran poses, including pursuing limited engagement and, at other times, pursuing efforts to change Iran’s regime. There have also been further efforts on behalf of the European Union to prevent a nuclear breakout in Iran through multilateral talks. To date, none of these efforts have been successful.

As former Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee and a former Marine, I believe a nuclear Iran is a significant roadblock to peace in the region, including the growth of stability in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is also an unacceptable security risk to the United States and the world. In addition to pursuing nuclear weapons, Iran continues to provide financial and material support to terrorist groups that use violence against the United States and our allies in the region. Furthermore, Iran provides arms and other assistance to armed factions in Iraq, in order to exert influence in the region.

Because of Iran’s demonstrated hostile intentions, I will continue to support policies that promote the containment of Iran until it agrees to permanently dismantle all components of its nuclear weapons program. For example, I recently agreed to co-sponsor the Iran Counter-Proliferation Act of 2007 (S. 970), which toughens sanctions against Iran and proposes a host of new policies aimed at halting the country's nuclear program. It is my hope that the United Nations Security Council will continue to work collectively and decisively to stifle the Iranian regime's dangerous attempts to exert influence over the international community. Again, thank you for taking the time to contact me. If you would like more information on issues before the Senate, please visit my website at http://roberts.senate.gov.

With every best wish,

Sincerely,
Pat Roberts
