Help Wanted: Regional Coordinator for the Take Charge Challenge

Lawrence is competing against Manhattan in the Take Charge Challenge - an energy efficiency contest coordinated by the Climate and Energy Project (CEP) and sponsored by the Kansas Energy Office in partnership with communities and utilities across the state.

Sixteen cities in four regions will compete to save energy, save money and win the Take Charge Challenge. One winner from each region will be selected based on residential and small commercial participation in Efficiency Kansas and Federal Weatherization, utility program offerings, including community engagement and lighting switches. Each region winner will be awarded an efficiency prize that will benefit the community as a whole.

The Challenge will run from October 2010 thru October 2011. Each region will have a part-time regional coordinator to facilitate planning and coordination throughout the year.

This is a contract position: one year, part time, $12,000-$15,000.

LAWRENCE ELECTRONIC RECYCLING EVENT
Free State High School (north parking lot), 4700 Overland Drive, Lawrence KS


The City of Lawrence Waste Reduction and Recycling Division invites residents and small businesses to recycle old, unwanted electronic equipment. Electronic equipment may contain hazardous components such as lead, mercury and cadmium. Recycling your unwanted electronic equipment keeps these hazardous components out of the landfill.

Items accepted for recycling: computer monitors, desktops, laptops, keyboards, printers and other peripherals, televisions, VHS/DVD drives, copiers, scanners, fax machines, small appliances (microwaves and toaster ovens), cell phones, and other hand held devices. A recycling fee applies for computer monitors ($10) and televisions ($15). Fees may be paid by cash or checks. There are no charges for other electronic equipment.

Electronic recycling will be provided by Extreme Recycling (www.extremerecyclinginc.com), a permitted e-waste recycling and reclamation facility in the State of Kansas. All equipment received will be recycled in accordance to Federal and Kansas Electronic Waste Processing Regulations.

Douglas County residents are invited to attend and share their thoughts and vision for how to spend the $350,000 in the County's 2011 Budget for the “preservation and continued use of land, structures, and landmarks that define the County’s historical, social, economic, political and agricultural heritage; as well as...agricultural and open space identified as significant to the County’s future needs.”

The public is also invited to tour the Wakarusa River Valley Heritage Museum – located in Bloomington Park East at Clinton Lake just outside of Lawrence – from 2-2:45pm prior to the public forum.
