Conn. Guard detachment heading to Egypt --Unit will provide on-demand aviation asset to Multinational Force and Observers commander to support mission of supervising security provisions of Egypt/Israel Peace Treaty 24 Jan 2011 Connecticut National Guard Detachment 2, Company I, 185th Aviation Regiment of Groton has mobilized and will deploy to the Sinai Peninsula, Egypt, to support the Multinational Force and Observers. The unit left Connecticut Jan. 15 for Fort Benning, Ga., for further training and validation. The unit operates C-23C Sherpa aircraft and has deployed three times in the last seven years in support of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Egypt shuts down Al Jazeera bureau --Network's licences cancelled and accreditation of staff in Cairo withdrawn by order of information minister 30 Jan 2011 The Egyptian authorities are revoking the Al Jazeera Network's licence to broadcast from the country, and will be shutting down its bureau office in Cairo, state television has said. "The information minister [Anas al-Fikki] ordered... suspension of operations of Al Jazeera, cancelling of its licences and withdrawing accreditation to all its staff as of today," a statement on the official Mena news agency said on Sunday. The network received notification from the Egyptian authorities on Sunday morning.
Mubarak gives army shoot-to-kill order 30 Jan 2011 Embattled Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has reportedly given his armed forces the authority to shoot-to-kill as anti-government protests gain momentum. Reports say the army has been ordered to shoot when it sees fit. Military helicopters and jet fighters fly over major locations as the numbers of protesters multiply there. Tens of thousands of people have practically taken over the Tahrir Square in the city center despite heavy military presence, a Press TV correspondent reported.
Bush Aide Found in Dumpster Died of 'Blunt Force Trauma' --Toxicology 'didn't play a role" in his death, officials said. 28 Jan 2011 Homicide victim John P. Wheeler III, a former Pentagon official and presidential aide whose body was discovered Dec. 31 in a Wilmington landfill, was beaten to death in an assault, the Delaware medical examiner’s office announced today. The official cause of Wheeler’s slaying was "blunt force trauma," agency spokesman Karl Kanefsky said. Wheeler was a defense consultant and expert on chemical and biological weapons, who most recently worked part-time for the MITRE Corp.
