Invitation - KC American Friends Service Committee: 'U. S. Iraq War Vets, Iraq War Refugees breaking bread together, March 14th" - Discomfit Magazine

Dear Friends,

More and more military and political leaders are recognizing that
security cannot be achieved by expanding military action. Even General
David Petraeus has said, "You can't kill your way out of an
insurgency."

Reflecting on this and the approach the 6th Anniversary of the
beginning of the Iraq war, we believe we must strengthen bridges of
understanding between Iraqis and U.S. citizens. We must strengthen our
ability to use diplomacy and remove the causes of violence and
insecurity. And we must heal the wounds of those who have been most
injured by this war: our troops and Iraqi civilians.

We would like to invite Iraq war veterans to be our guest at the
Saturday, March 14th  “Breaking Bread Together: A Dinner with KC Area
Iraqi Refugees and Iraq War Veterans” from 5:30 to 7:00pm at Community
Christian Church, 4601 Main, KCMO. Not only is the dinner a fundraiser
for refugees of the Iraq war settling in the KC area but it is also an
opportunity for the Iraqis to proudly share a little of their culture
with us. Further the event makes a statement showing that we can come
together in peace - Iraqis, War Veterans, U.S. citizens – we can share
a meal together in fellowship and harmony.

We can use your help in promoting this event and encouraging vets and
others to attend and RSVP for the dinner at 816 931-5256 or
iharritt@afsc.org . While we are inviting as many Iraq war vets and
Iraq refugees as we are able to be about guests, we are asking others
for a donation of $20 /person for the meal. Space will be limited and
we will need to know how much food to prepare. A menu for the dinner,
which will consist of authentic Iraqi cuisine prepared by Iraqis, can
be downloaded at http://www.afsc.org/kansascity/ht/a/GetDocumentAction/i/75549
.

We also encourage you to join us and to advertise the Peace Race for
the Human Race Vigil and Rally which will take place at Mill Creek
Park, 47th Street and Main, KCMO from 3:30 to 5:00pm.

The event will include a vigil, speakers, music (Butermilk Boys) and
an interfaith prayer ceremony.

Individuals with questions can contact me at 816 931-5256 or
iharritt@afsc.org

A PDF file of the flyer can be downloaded  at
http://www.afsc.org/kansascity/ht/a/GetDocumentAction/i/74971 .

We hold this event knowing that peace is possible if we sincerely pray
and work for a peaceful, just and secure world.

We hope you can join us. Thank you for your service to our community
and work for a more peaceful world.

Sincerely,
Ira Harritt
